Can LASIK Be Done Twice?

What Happens After Your First Surgery?

Picture life without glasses or contacts after a successful LASIK procedure – it's a game-changer. But, as time goes by, your vision might change. Can we do LASIK again? This post will examine why your vision might shift after LASIK and when a second surgery could be an option.

Understanding Changes After LASIK

Before discussing a second LASIK, let's understand why your vision might change after the first surgery.

Usually, One LASIK is Enough

LASIK is meant to give you long-lasting, clear vision, but doesn't promise a lifetime fix. Some people might notice changes in their vision several years after LASIK, leading them to think about a second surgery.

If you're considering another LASIK, start by talking to the place that did your first surgery. We'll check to see if you qualify for another procedure based on factors like age and eye health.

When We Might Need LASIK Again

Even though LASIK is remarkable, it doesn't fix all vision problems. If your eyes still have issues not fixed by the first LASIK, like trouble focusing up close or developing cataracts, a second LASIK might be considered. This usually happens 5-10 years after the first LASIK.

Sometimes, it's not LASIK—it's just your eyes getting older. Cataracts and trouble focusing up close (presbyopia) are common as you age, and LASIK can't fix them.

Cataracts and Presbyopia: Not Fixable with LASIK

Cataracts cloud vision and require different surgeries. LASIK works on the cornea, not the lens, where cataracts happen. For focusing problems (presbyopia), LASIK won't help because it's also about changes in the lens.

If you want clear vision with cataracts or presbyopia, your doctor might suggest other options, such as special lenses.

Can we do LASIK twice? It depends on your situation. While LASIK is a great help, changes in your vision might make you think about a second surgery. Talk to experts, like us at Restivo Laser Vision in  Austin, Texas, to figure out the best way to keep your vision clear and sharp.
