What Do You See During LASIK Eye Surgery?

Can You See During LASIK Eye Surgery?

One of the most common questions patients ask before LASIK is, “Can you see during LASIK eye surgery?” The answer is yes, you are awake during LASIK and may see lights, movement, or blurry shapes, but you should not clearly see the details of the procedure. Your eyes are numbed with drops before surgery, and your surgeon will guide you through each step to help keep you comfortable.

During LASIK, patients are usually asked to focus on a target light while the laser reshapes the cornea. This helps keep the eye properly positioned during treatment.

What Do You See During LASIK?

During LASIK, your vision may become blurry, dim, or temporarily change throughout the procedure. You may notice a blinking light, bright light, shadows, or movement, but most patients do not see anything clearly or sharply. Some patients may also feel brief pressure when the eye is positioned for treatment.

This is normal. LASIK is performed one eye at a time, and the eye being treated may experience temporary vision changes while the surgeon creates the corneal flap and uses the laser to reshape the eye.

Can You Blink During LASIK?

You do not need to worry about blinking during LASIK. A small instrument is used to gently hold the eyelids open during the procedure, so patients do not have to keep their eyes open on their own. Your eye is also numbed before treatment, which helps reduce discomfort and blinking reflexes.

Even if your eye moves slightly, modern LASIK technology uses advanced tracking systems to help guide the laser with precision. At Restivo Laser Vision, patients are walked through the process before treatment so they know what to expect and feel more at ease.

Does LASIK Hurt?

LASIK is typically not painful because numbing drops are placed in the eye before the procedure begins. You may feel pressure, mild tightness, or a strange sensation, but you should not feel sharp pain during the laser treatment.

After LASIK, it is common to experience temporary irritation, watering, burning, or blurry vision as the eyes begin to heal. These symptoms are usually temporary and will be reviewed with you during your aftercare instructions.

What Happens Right After LASIK?

Immediately after LASIK, your vision may look cloudy, hazy, or foggy. Many patients notice improvement within the first day, but every patient heals differently. Your doctor will provide aftercare instructions, including how to use eye drops, avoid rubbing your eyes, and protect your eyes during early healing.

You should contact your eye doctor right away if you experience severe pain, worsening vision, or symptoms that do not feel normal.
